Best on-time airports are in the Pacific Northwest

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Seattle, Portland top the list for first quarter
The general impression of the Pacific Northwest is a place with lots of rain, clouds and fog, especially in winter – the kind of weather that’s not friendly to on-time airport operations. But according to federal statistics, that was not the case in the first quarter of 2010. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that the major airport with the best rate of on-time arrivals and departures during January-March of this year was Seattle – and ranking in second place was Portland, Ore. Seattle’s on-time arrival rate was just over 87 percent, while Portland’s was 86.2; for on-time departures, Seattle grabbed the number one spot with a rate of 89.5 percent, followed by Portland’s 89.2 percent. Ranking 29th out of 29 major airports for on-time departures was Newark, at 70.1 percent. Newark was also dead last in on-time arrivals during the first quarter, at 65.9 percent.

The U.S. airline industry as a whole achieved a 77.8 percent on-time arrivals rate for the first quarter of 2010, vs. a 79.2 percent rate for the same three months a year ago. Although the industry improved its performance with checked luggage – the number of mishandled bags averaged 4.1 per 10,000 passengers, a 6 percent drop from last year’s first quarter – it fared much worse with passenger bumpings. The number of “involuntary denied boardings” in the first quarter was 1.73 per 10,000 passengers, up 28 percent year-over-year. Of the 18 airlines tracked, Atlantic Southeast had the worst first quarter record for mishandled baggage, at 9.13 per 10,000 passengers, while AirTran had the best at 1.73. The worst record for passenger bumpings was at American Eagle (4.59 per 10,000 passengers), and the best was at JetBlue (0.01 per 10,000). For the 12-month period ended in March 2010, the three airlines with the best on-time arrival records were (in order) Hawaiian, Alaska and Southwest. Comair had the worst on-time record, ranking just below Atlantic Southeast and AirTran.

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

US Airways has reduced the cost of award ticket changes and redeposits for international itineraries from $250 to $150. This is very good news. There are so many promotions to get US Airways miles for cheap, but the one major point of frustration with them (for me at least) has been the ridiculous...
